In the recent years computer flight simulation has become so popular that now there’s even Google flight simulator – an application developed by Google themselves, which allows you to fly anywhere in the world using your chosen aircraft. However, how does Google’s flight sim compare with other flight simulator games currently available? Let’s take a closer look and see what’s what.
Google Flight Simulator
Well, let’s start off with the selection of air crafts available in Google flight simulator. Unfortunately, there are only 2-3 planes (F16 fighter jet and SR22 propeller airplane) that you can choose from in the game, which is nothing compared to what games such as RC flight simulator have to offer. I think the reason for that is because when Google were developing their game, they wanted to create a maximum accurate landscape of the world, rather than a big choice of air crafts.
Google Flight Simulator – Start Points
Commonly, in most flight simulator games, the game starts in an airport of your choice. However, with Google flight simulator you can start wherever you want, i.e. in the air anywhere in the world. There’s also a choice of 20+ airports, but again that’s not much compared to Microsoft flight simulator, for example, where there are thousands of airports from all around the world.
It’s clearly, that the main focus in Google flight simulator wasn’t as much the gameplay as the reality of the surroundings. You don’t get a massive choice of fancy air crafts, neither you get loads of airports. However, when it comes to matching the objects shown in the game compared to the ones in the real world, then you can definitely say that Google has done a great job by making them very close to reality.
Google Flight Simulator Loses Out
Overall, Google flight simulator can’t really compete with the industry leaders in flight simulator games, since the only criteria they meet is the landscape. Apart from that, they don’t really have much to offer, while for example ProFlightSimulator, which is my favourite PC flight sim, it’s a complete game that has an eye on every detail.
With ProFlightSimulator you can design your own landscapes, choose from more than 100 different air crafts and fly from over 20000 worldwide airports. All this is combined with the air craft behaviour which is designed to be exactly as the real ones behave. The in-game graphics aren’t lucking either, but personally for me it’s more important to understand how to control an air craft, rather than look at the surroundings, and this is where Google flight simulator loses out BIG time. Therefore, if you ask my opinion, then it’s ProFlightSimulator all the time.
